This past August, I reached a milestone that I was told I probably wouldn't reach - 5 years living with metastatic breast cancer. I'm lucky. Oh so lucky.
The cancer spread to my bones and so far, that's where it's stayed. Though, while I silently thanked the universe that I was still alive, I am struggling with the sometimes suffocating guilt I feel as I have watched countless friends die.
I watched my son graduate high school and walk across the stage. I helped him move into his dorm room at college, and I am cautiously optimistic that I may actually see him graduate college.
In the meantime, I do whatever I can and lend my voice where it will do the most good in elevating the conversation regarding metastatic breast cancer. In addition to blogging and attending conferences, I am the current President of METUP - an activist organization committed to changing the landscape of metastatic breast cancer that was originally founded by Beth Caldwell and Jennie Grimes.
While it's critical to raise funds for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer so researchers can keep working, there also needs to be those that question the status quo. We need people that cause disruption to make key people pay attention and hear us. Direct action does this. Direct action gets things done. We owe it to those that are no longer with us to aggressively pursue the change that is desperately needed for all of us.
