"As a 'Lifer' I feel it is important to enroll in the trials. It makes me feel like I am giving back to others."
I was diagnosed with MBC de novo on April 27, 2015. This was on my 25th wedding anniversary – a day that was suppose to be filled with celebration. I went into the hospital for what we thought would be a routine hysterectomy. When I awoke from the anesthesia, I was told I had cancer. “HUH?!?!?! What did you just say? Is this some kind of joke?”
From that moment, I decided that I would not look back or ask, “Why me?” That doesn’t change the diagnosis, it just wastes very valuable energy.
I have been blessed with a fantastic support system. My husband, sons, 2 of the most beautiful grand babies, and the most fantastic friends a girl could ask for. I am being treated at the world renowned Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and have what I consider a “Rock Star” oncologist and medical team.
I am currently on a clinical trial that seems to be yielding fantastic results. As a “Lifer” I feel it is important to enroll in the trials. It makes me feel like I am giving back to others and in some ways, makes me a “pioneer” in cancer research – which is where we in the world of Metastatic Breast Cancer need to focus.
