“They say if you can fight and stay alive long enough there will be new treatments”

Sherry wrote us to tell her husband Dave’s story

My husband was diagnosed with Stage 3 Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC). He had a total left nephrectomy on our 35th wedding Anniversary on Sept. 10, 2012. At that time there was no treatment that was available.

Three years later, it metastasized to his right lung which was successfully treated with SBRT. Two years later another tumor in the right lung but more importantly a very aggressive metastatic tumor to his right kidney. He had a partial right nephrectomy and three months later it started to grow again in his right kidney! Renal Cell Carcinoma treatment has come so far in the past couple of years. They say if you can fight and stay alive long enough there will be new treatments and that has been true for him. He is approaching a year since starting on a combination Immunotherapy followed by a single Immunotherapy. It has kept the RCC at bay maybe even shrunk slightly. He told me “I don’t know what I would have done without my team at the University of Chicago. It will be seven years on Sept 10, 2019, and still fighting!”
